Symptoms:
Symptoms are usually only noticed in severe cases, in which case fish will present with anemia, listless behavior, emaciation, and pop-eye. Depending upon the parasite, there may also be extensive gill and kidney damage. |

Cause:
The protozoa Trypanosoma and Trypanoplasma and the digenetic fluke, Sanguinicola. |

Treatment:
Injectable praziquantel (5-100 mg/Kg fish) injected intramuscularly and an organophosphorus insecticide, such as metriphonate, to kill the leeches (0.25-0.4 mg/L). The insecticide should be administered as a continuous bath for 7-10 days and may need to be repeated if the fish's health does not improve. |
