Symptoms:
Infected fish are usually seen scraping against objects in the tank, but the chief characteristic symptom is the presence of whitish-green threads that hang out of the fish's gills. |

Cause:
The parasite Ergasilus. This parasite is very similar to Anchor Worm (Larnaea), differing mostly in that Ergasilus attacks the gills instead of the skin. |

Treatment:
If only one fish is infected, isolate the lone fish in a hospital tank and treat with 10 to 30 minute bath of 10 mg/L Potassium permanganate. If more than fish is infected, treat all fish and the tank they inhabit with 2 mg/L of Potassium permanganate. Note, this will dye the water. |
