Nitrite Poisoning
Symptoms:

Fish that have nitrite poisoning are usually listlessness. They may also have gill discoloration, gasp for air. Nitrite poisoning can sometimes kill fish suddenly and unexpectedly.

Cause:

Elevated nitrite levels. When the nitrite levels in the aquarium become too elevated, it interferes with the fishes’ ability to absorb oxygen, causing your fishes to die of suffocation.

Treatment:

Test the water to verify the diagnosis. If any nitrite is detected, perform an immediate water change. Adding salt will also reduce the toxicity of nitrite.
